Château de Saint Trys, in Anse in the Rhône, is an eighteenth-century residence set at the heart of the Beaujolais hills, twenty-five minutes north of Lyon. Its century-old park — majestic cedars, mirror pools, an avenue of lindens — offers a rare setting for an open-air ceremony. The orangery, lime-washed in white, extends the main building and opens onto a terrace overlooking the vines.

Delphine and Benjamin chose to set the chuppah — the nuptial canopy — in the central clearing of the park, beneath the great cedars. Four poles carried by their four closest friends, a prayer shawl stretched as the roof, a flowered arch of peonies and olive branches. For an hour, the place became an open-air synagogue.

Delphine is a paediatrician in Lyon, Benjamin is a lawyer. They wanted a Jewish wedding at once deeply traditional and contemporary — keeping the ritual strength of the seven blessings, the breaking of the glass and the hora, without weighing the whole down.

The religious ceremony, led by their rabbi, was held under the chuppah: the reading of the ketubah, the exchange of rings, the seven blessings recited in turn by loved ones, and the famous breaking of the glass under Benjamin's foot — that moment when the whole assembly cries "Mazel Tov" and the silence of the park is, at last, broken. Then the hora, that circular dance in which the couple are lifted on two chairs, carried at arm's length by the family, as the klezmer music takes over.

Ma lecture du jourMy reading of the day

A short teaser, three minutes, opening on Benjamin's hands adjusting his kippah and closing on the two chairs coming back down, breathless, after the hora. I wanted the film to breathe the liturgy without ever illustrating it — stay at eye level, let the gestures say what they know how to say.

It is one of the films where the soundtrack mattered most: I edited over a very held klezmer piece, violin and clarinet, that gradually opens into the explosion of the hora. The rest of the time, I let the rabbi's chant come through in touches, barely mixed.

Ma démarche pour ce filmMy approach for this film

For this wedding, I wanted the film, above all, to be a cinematic transcription of the Jewish rites. I reread a few pages of Elie Wiesel and rewatched Radu Mihaileanu's "Train of Life" to find that tension between gravity and joy that runs through the liturgy. I prepared the hora beforehand with a fellow camera operator: we filmed it as a pair, him on a circular dolly around the lifted chairs, me low to the floor to catch the feet striking the parquet and the hands catching hold. For the seven blessings, I framed each voice separately, one shot per blessor, so each person exists on screen — the score opens slowly, the rabbi's chant rises, and on the breaking of the glass I cut sharp on the "Mazel Tov". Respect for the ritual passes through the frame.

On the family side, I took time to film Delphine's grandparents at length, both survivors and bearers of a history that this wedding carries forward in silence. One shot holds them, seated in the front row beneath the chuppah, pressed against each other, eyes closed during the ketubah. I also followed Benjamin's great-nephews bringing the rings on a velvet cushion, and his sister adjusting the tallit on his shoulders before the ceremony. What remains is that chain holding. One generation passing the baton.
