Perched on a hillside at the heart of the Mâconnais, in Southern Burgundy, Château de Pierreclos overlooks a landscape of vineyards and hamlets of pale golden stone. The medieval building, reshaped across the centuries, has kept its round towers, its paved courtyard and its dovecote — a setting without artifice, that carries History without performing it.
It is also, and perhaps above all, a place inhabited by the memory of Lamartine: the poet came here often, dreamed here of Elvire, and several rooms of the château still hold the trace of his visits. For Claudia, a lover of poetry, and Quentin, a devoted reader of History, the choice of Pierreclos felt self-evident. All three of us knew, from the very first visit, that the film would carry something of that Lamartine thread.
Claudia and Quentin met at the municipal library, one Saturday morning, around the same shelf devoted to French romanticism. He had come looking for a biography, she was leafing through a volume of Lamartine — the coincidence became their running joke, then their story. For their wedding, they wanted to recover that first simplicity: a sober secular ceremony, readings chosen together, and the close presence of their families.
They had asked me for a teaser before the full film, to give to their grandparents. They wanted it to feel like a short poem, carried by a few lines of Le Lac. No dialogue: only the voice, the music and the gazes.
Ma lecture du jourMy reading of the day
I filmed the preparations on 35mm, at a distance, to let Claudia breathe. The ceremony was held in the inner courtyard of the château, in a raking light I had been waiting months to find in a place like this. Quentin's parents read a passage of Le Lac in two voices — one of the truest moments of the day.
For the edit, I looked for a suspended rhythm, almost outside of time. The score is an instrumental cover for piano and strings — nothing spectacular, everything in restraint. It is, I think, the teaser closest to what I'm seeking at the moment: filming a wedding the way one writes a letter.
Ma démarche pour ce filmMy approach for this film
For Claudia and Quentin, I set out to film a wedding that felt like a book. He is a lover of History, she of poetry — and Château de Pierreclos carries within it the shadow of Lamartine, who came here to dream of Elvire. So I wove the film around Le Lac: a few lines in voice-over, an editing rhythm that follows the poem's own, and a piano score that lets the silences breathe.
On the family side, I chose to film long gazes between generations: Claudia's grandmother never taking her eyes off her granddaughter, Quentin's father wiping away a tear during a speech. The families don't pose, they simply exist within the frame. That is when the film becomes an object to pass on to future generations — a fragment of time kept alive.
